Remote Learning

Our approach

Our approach to remote learning is directly linked to the curriculum provision in school and the curriculum offered remotely mirrors the curriculum offered in the classroom.

Dove Bank Primary School school uses resources from various sources, including Oak Academy, BBC Bite-Size, etc. Packs of resources are also made available for pupils where these are needed.

Those children who remain in school, either as children of key workers or who were identified as vulnerable, experience a curriculum that is the same as those children learning at home.

In planning our recovery curriculum, each class teacher identifies the following:

Knowledge & skills from autumn term 2020
Knowledge & skills from remote learning
Reactivation – retrieval practice Diagnostic assessment – identifying gaps
Priorities for new learning & curriculum

When children return to school after the lockdown periods, they are well supported and any children in need of additional catch-up work are quickly identified through assessments.

Remote Education Provision

Microsoft OneDrive provides the platform for our remote education provision with each class teacher uploading the week’s work to the class folder as necessary. This includes a timetable with voiceover explanation, a bank of resources needed for the day/week, video clips explaining the learning in mathematics & phonics, and a variety of other useful resources and links for children/parents to use.

Class Dojo is used to allow pupils and parents to easily see what was available on the OneDrive. Class Dojo also allows pupils and families to feel connected to the school as this is where teachers will communicate with pupils.

We have adapted and improved our remote education provision over time in response to feedback from parents and children through our lockdown questionnaire.

Parents and carers communicate with teachers and support staff through Class Dojo and dedicated class email addresses.

How will my child be taught remotely?

Teachers will include a learning activity for each of the following: English (including reading, phonics & spelling), maths, topic work and physical education. We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

Daily interaction daily on Class Dojo and Teams includes daily updates, videos and uploaded work as appropriate:

Work will be added to each class OneDrive
Live interaction on Teams when necessary
Recorded lessons made by Dove Bank teachers
Printed paper packs produced by teachers that can be collected from the school office
Reading books for pupils to have at home
Commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences

We will use a variety of links including those from:

Power Maths – the maths scheme that we follow in school during our daily maths lessons

Engagement

Our expectations for children’s engagement and the support that parents and carers should provide at home – Create a positive environment for your child to learn at home, for example:

Distinguish between weekdays and weekends, to separate school life and home life.

Designate a working space if possible, and at the end of the day have a clear cut-off to signal school time is over.

Create and stick to a routine, as this is what your child is used to at school. For example, eat breakfast at the same time each morning and make sure they’re dressed before starting the ‘school’ day.

Stick a timetable up on the wall so everyone knows what they should be doing when, and tick activities off throughout the day.

Make time for exercise and breaks throughout the day to keep your child active.
